As if you needed any extra motivation to head to the beach this weekend, Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) opens this Sunday to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway Peninsula following Hurricane Sandy.
Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) which has had a public gallery in Fort Tilden for the past 19 years, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of the festival. Rockaway! was conceived by MoMA PS1’s Director, Klaus Biesenbach, in close collaboration with Patti Smith to showcase the natural and historical beauty of Fort Tilden.
Opening Day Schedule:
Noon-8 PM: Exhibition on view at Fort Tilden including site-specific installations by Patti Smith, Adrián Villar Rojas, and Janet Cardiff (a sound piece on loan from MOMA).
7 PM: A poetry reading of Walt Whitman by James Franco and Patti Smith followed by acoustic songs by Patti Smith with special guests Lenny Kaye and Jesse Smith
8 PM-midnight: After party at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club
Also part of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood. The exhibition will include the work of dozens of artists including: Marina Abromovic, Doug Aitken, Huma Bhabha, Olaf Breuning, Bruce High Quality Foundation, Zackary Drucker, Camille Henrot, Alex Israel, Terence Koh, Tracey Moffatt, Elizabeth Peyton, Tom Sachs and Laurie Simmons.
