‘Visions of Mary Frank’ with ‘JG’

Film Forum is presenting free screenings of two films by and about two important contemporary artists: Mary Frank and Tacita Dean through April 22.

Directed by John Cohen, in “Visions of Mary Frank” the filmmaker interviews painter Mary Frank, (once married to photographer Robert Frank) about having put her art before all else in life.

JG, shot in 35mm anamorphic film by British artist Tacita Dean sometimes divides the screen into three parts, using a fixed camera and masking to create stunning, surreal juxtapositions of earth, salt, clay, mountains, an armadillo awakening, and much else that surprises and delights. JG is an homage to both the writings of J.G. Ballard and the Spiral Jetty earthwork of sculptor Robert Smithson.

On April 22nd at the 8:20pm screening, filmmaker John Cohen will be in person with Artist/Subject Mary Frank.

Daily screenings at 1:00, 2:50, 4:40, 6:30, 8:20, 10:10
